A Project to Try – An Exciting Trellis

January 27, 2009

As I was preparing my previous post, I saw these pretty Dendron ‘tree’ coat racks from Varangis.

Varganis Tree Rack

The Varangis versions are presumably not intended for outdoor use and I also can tell that their craftsmanship is far beyond what is needed for the idea they inspired.

I would love to make something like these for my garden this spring…or perhaps for a client… – I think rebar would be the best material and then painted – or perhaps some thin pipe, or conduit.

Thin pipe, conduit, rebar

1. Abstract (Stacked chairs), 2. Silver Conduit, 3. Rebar
I think that they would be lovely with some nice Clematis, Jasmine or Honeysuckle growing on them.

Honeysuckle, Jasmine, Clematis
1. pink honeysuckle, 2. The Jasmine Blues, 3. close clematis
At lest three in a row would be good, but perhaps they could line a fence in a modern courtyard.  I am thinking in my own garden to create a visual break along the edge of a patio.  I am very inspired!!

Here is the description of the Varangis version:

This free-standing coat stand is made of eight bent tubular stainless steel poles that spread out like tree branches (dendron is the Greek word for tree) ending in cast coat-pegs. Offering 80 different configuration options, it is not only a functional everyday piece of furniture, but also a surprising objet d’art. Designed to be stable in case of one-sided and maximum loads as well as a supporting surface inclination. The finishing is either polished stainless steel (golden, silver) or stove enameled color (green in four shades, white, brown, ivory.)
