Garden Destination: Harvard Massachusetts’ Fruitlands Museum

Have you ever looked at something so many times you simply stop seeing it?  Shockingly… that is a little of what happened with me and the tree people at The Fruitlands Museum.  Fruitlands (here in my town of Harvard) is a place I frequent regularly for dinners, yoga, and special town events.  Fruitlands is a museum now, but it was historically the home of Bronson Alcott and the Transcendentalists in colonial times.  The tree people, created and installed by Vermont artist Joe Wheelwright are a fixture at this amazing place.

This morning at yoga, I learned that they won’t be here forever and it dawned on me that much as I admire these interesting pieces of landscape art, I had never shared them with you.  Sadly, rumor has it that their reign over the beautiful land and views that comprise the museum is going to come to an end later this summer. (unless, that is, a grass roots movement to save at least one of them by buying it from the artist raises enough money).

Joe’s tree people are such a familiar and much loved local sight, I will miss them when they are gone. The amazing human like structure of an upturned tree never ceases to intrigue me. I am not sure where they will go next, but if you don’t have a chance to visit them before they are gone, I will try to find out their next stop so maybe you can see them there.

  1. I was there last year and these tree sculptures are so amaizng that I am shocked they are leaving! I’m so glad I got to see them. Where are they heading? I cannot imagine how beautiful it is to take a yoga class there.

  2. Michelle says:

The Katonah Museum of Art in Westchester County, NY has an exhibit of these cool tree sculptures until May 2012. The museum is closed for an installation until Oct 2nd, so we’ll be making a trip soon to see them. I can’t wait!
