Tokyo’s Wabi Sabi Potted Gardens

I am so captivated and inspired by the flickr photostream of TsuyaTsuya Nemury.

The stream is filled with images are of Tokyo’s potted gardens.  In a city where houses are small and gardens even smaller, most gardens are of the container variety.

I find it so interesting that our penchant in the US and UK (among other) is generally to mix and match plants to make container arrangements.  Huge overflowing mixes of things that we try and color coordinate.  Here it is the opposite.

In Tokyo it seems that the focus is on each plant individually and container gardens are a mix of pots and plants never sharing their space with each other.  I find it beautifully textural, and I love the cluttered earthy feel to it.

I am also noticing the general lack of flowers.  There are lots indoor/outdoor plants too.

This coffee table book material if you ask me.  The flickr stream is huge with over 300 pitures; it was so hard to choose my favorites.  If you have a few minutes to get lost in the streets of Tokyo and enjoy all these Urban container gardens head on over. What does it inspire in you?

Hi, I'm Rochelle and for 18 years I have worked as a landscape designer, author/writer, and design teacher. I've designed residential and hospitality (for hotels, restaurants, and spas) gardens across the USA and in the UK, Europe and the Middle East. After many years of teaching garden design topics in person, I launched the PITH + VIGOR Boot Camp series in early 2018. Through my blog, social media, and online courses (Garden Design Bootcamp and Planting Design Boot Camp) I aim to help homeowners learn how to confidently design and create home gardens that reflect their own personal and unique style.
