Phillip Nixon designed these simple but interesting little garden walls for his entry in the Ephemeral Gardens Exhibition in Quebec City, Canada in 2008. These simple garden walls are designed and held together with rebar and recycled wood.
So many times you see things in show gardens that aren’t realistic in real gardens but I don’t think that this is the case here. These gardens did have to last the entire summer and not just a few days (but not the winter). Building something like this, I think it would be important to have a free draining base – just as it would be anywhere, but I am thinking it might also be good to design a layer that would allow good airflow and keep the bottom-most wood layer slightly off the ground.
