Do you remember when you were a kid and you did sand art? Taking a more sophisticated approach, Japanese designers at Mindscape have inspired my Monday DIY. Their approach uses pretty shades of brown dirt and varied natural textures to plant Sansevieria (a good choice for this type of low water garden).
Plant in color….you can get colored sand in large quantities here. My thoughts for this project include mixing silver and blue succulents planted up top with layers of different shades of brown mulch and gravel, but with a beautiful layer of gold sand cutting through it all. (adding a little glam factor)
Also, I am thinking that it might be interesting to try out growing carrots in clear containers…they like sandy soil and if you can grow them close enough to the glass it could be interesting to see what happens to the sand art as the orange arms reach deeper into the picture.
From the top left clockwise: Clear boxes from the Container Store. Tall Cylindrical floor vases from Secret Garden Flowers. Colored wedding sand from Sandsational and glass vase with crushed seashells from Crate and Barrel.
It’s an experiment…. but I am inspired and will let you know how it turns out….
This does bring back memories. Any experience on how a watering would work with the groovy sand designs? I agree the Sanservieria would be a good choice as it really needs hardly any water. Post some pics of the root veggies if you try it.

This is very appealing. It reminds me of the exposed earth you see in the southwest, but I think it could be tailored to reflect the geology of many locations. I wonder how I could make it work for me…
Those are lovely! What a great idea and beautiful execution.
