Plant Palette: Dusty Victorian

I was struck this morning when I opened up the latest email from Avant Gardens. These plants were part of the mix that they are offering in early season sales and my mind immediately thought of dusty old pictures of Victorians in the their gardens. Yes I know that back in the day, they didn’t live in a sepia colored world (duh, but wouldn’t that be interesting for a while?) and that old pictures just look like that, but wouldn’t it be fun to make a garden full of plants that we could pretend like we all old fashioned in?

All images from Avant Gardens.

Phlox ‘Sherbert Blend’, Acer ‘Esk Sunset’, Cotinus ‘Daydream’, Magnolia ‘Sunsation’ and Rodgersia ‘Chocolate Wings’.

And as a side note — check back later today — I have a big surprise that I am excited to share!!!  (here is a hint — check out the writers page….)

Hi, I'm Rochelle and for 18 years I have worked as a landscape designer, author/writer, and design teacher. I've designed residential and hospitality (for hotels, restaurants, and spas) gardens across the USA and in the UK, Europe and the Middle East. After many years of teaching garden design topics in person, I launched the PITH + VIGOR Boot Camp series in early 2018. Through my blog, social media, and online courses (Garden Design Bootcamp and Planting Design Boot Camp) I aim to help homeowners learn how to confidently design and create home gardens that reflect their own personal and unique style.

Thanks for the comment! The color scheme wasn’t intended, but after the images were selected and opening page was put together, it did have that old world feel. I love it when combinations like this just happen!

The phlox is, to me, especially eye catching. And the magnolia is truly “Sunsation-al” 🙂
