My tiny little local General Store has a knack for getting some interesting products sometimes. Today when I stopped for a coffee, I discovered Amazon Lights — which smelled amazing. The scent is a combination of Andiroba oil, citronella, rosemary and Thyme.
What is Andiroba oil? I wondered too. It is the oil is extracted from the round chestnut-like fruits of the Andiroba Tree. One Andiroba tree can produce nearly a quarter of a ton of seeds annually and each seed is composed of 50% oil, making this one of Brazil’s most sustainable rainforest products. The Andiroba tree is native to tropical South America. Extracts from its bark, flowers and fruits have been used for centuries by the Amazonian people as a source of prevention and treatment for a variety of ailments: arthritis, inflammation, skin disorders, fevers, flu and depression – just to name a few. And apparently is is quite good at chasing away bugs….or at the very least, I am going to use it to make things smell particularly nice out in the garden.
