Garden Design Related Magazines

March 16, 2010

I saw a very interesting post this morning over at Media Bistro about the rise in magazine titles related to home design and decorating as well as nature.

“Magazines focused on home design and decorating experienced more growth than any other genre in the last five years, according to the newest edition of The Standard Periodical Directory released today. Despite the shuttering of home magazine titles like Domino (nooooooooooooo!), Southern Accents and Metropolitan Home, the home magazine sector saw a jump from 123 titles in 2005 to 337 titles in 2010.

Other magazines experiencing recent growth include those focused on celebrities (jumping from 81 titles to 139), as well as magazines about oil/natural gas, wildlife, genetics, forestry, biology, and water supply. People simply cannot get enough of nature, sustainability, throw pillows and Miley Cyrus. They can, however, do without sex. Sex-related titles experienced a drop (ahem) in recent years, as did those focused on jobs (rather curiously) and manufacturing.

The Standard Periodical Directory is the U.S. and Canada’s largest directory of periodicals, taking in information on 65,166 publications, including 16,770 magazines, 13,469 journals, 8,503 newspapers, 15,061 newsletters, 3,302 directories, and 973 yearbooks.”

I still miss Domino, and some of the other defunct publications.  I have always thought that a Garden Design magazine with the format of Domino would be the the dreamiest thing ever….

But I am wondering who all these new players are? And if Home Design and Nature are two big growth areas, are there not some fabulous new outlets (I’m not talking about Garden Design and some of the other long standing players) for the combination of the two (i.e. design of the outdoor and natural areas related to your home?). I don’t know of too many do you? I think they must be online? Or maybe this cross hasn’t really been fully exploited?  I certainly don’t see them on my newsstand.  If you know of some….please share with us all, I am so curious. (I would love to know who they are regardless of nationality or language — let’s list them all!).

Oh – and I would love to hear what kind of features you love in your favorite garden design magazine — those you could do without  — and those you wish existed…..maybe we can create our own great place!

Heck yes! I have let all but one of my garden mag subscriptions run out, and when the time comes who knows what I’ll decide. I’ve always wondered WHY it is so hard to produce a good garden mag? We can clone life, access anything with our phones and put man into space but can’t create a worthy garden publication?

As for a Domino replacement, I’ve really been enjoying Design Sponge and Apartment Therapy all winter long.

My favorite feature in garden (or any) magazine has to be beautiful, inspiring pictures of well designed spaces/areas/things. Also, I enjoy a good before and after. And any article that includes info on growing food to eat.
