Vertical Gardening Inspiration & DIY

March 15, 2010

Have you noticed that vertical gardens have moved beyond experimental and into the realm of maturing design?  I thought I would share with you a few cool inspirations that I have come across lately.

This green wall is also a map of NYC’s central park.  The plants even map out different areas of the park corresponding to areas where there are trees and grass.

If you are looking for a few examples of DIY systems that vertical wall creators have come up with on their own, you might want to check out DIY Green Walls.

I love how the frames are a part of the design for this edible wall garden that was installed at restaurant Pizzeria Mozza in Los Angeles by Tournesol Siteworks.  The module used were the Elmich Vertical Greening Modules described here.

This is an interesting DIY vertical garden at Trunk Bar in Melbourne Australia. They have used stackable plastic crates made by Twin Pack.  These crates remind me of some of the crates that my vegetables come in — also I think I see these all the time at places like Costco and BJ’s.  I am wondering if they could be had easily?

Both of these came from Lushe Urban Greening an Aussie site with some terrific DIY green wall projects…click here to see the very cool bamboo pole vertical garden.

This wall garden shows how the plant material that is being used on green walls is ever expanding….

I really enjoyed this video from Jungle Walls.  Creators of this site not only write about vertical gardens, but Bob and Peter also created this one and the fabulously interesting video of the movement of the plants on the wall throughout the day.

And finally, found over at Living Wall ArtNg Sek San created the Mao Marilyn at the Singapore Garden Festival. Small living wall panels were used to hold individual plants. The plants are uniform in size, but the different in colors give rise to the iconic image.

Have you seen any other interesting developments in Green wall design?  Email me or comment and we can add to the collection!

Man I love living walls! It’s becoming my recent obsession! Just wished I lived in a more tolerant climate other than Iowa! I’m still going to give it a try! Nice post…love the pics!

I really love the garden wall.
    Very green & refreshing.

We didn’t get much green in the city nowadays 🙂
Singapore located in tropical weather zone, green in the city should help the general public absorb more heat..i guess

Of course james — you guys are always 5 steps ahead of us here — you are over the fascination and have moved on to healthy critique– we here in the US just had our round of spring trade shows and the dinky little green wall display was all everyone could talk about —
