Modern Landscape Masters : Jesus Moroles

October 20, 2008

Jesus Moroles has over 2000 installed works worldwide and is unparallelled in his field. He works in granite and primarily on large public installations but I recently saw these benches that could be reasonably installed in a residential garden or other intimate public space. They move and to me they resemble millstones that are popular for landscape and garden use in New England.

The Arthur Roger Gallery who respresents him says:

Jesús Moroles works on both a monumental and small scale in his granite sculpture. He achieves a poetic resonance of material, form and motif though working with a stone of great density, hardness and weight. Moroles combines cutting and polishing techniques with the natural presence of the stone to create works of universal stature. Moroles states, ” My work is a discussion of how man exists in nature and touches nature and uses nature. Each of my pieces has about 50 percent of its surfaces untouched and raw—those are parts of the stone that were torn. The rest of the work is smoothed and polished. The effect, which I want people to not only look at but touch, is a harmonious coexistence of the two.”
