Placing Garden Art & Bluegreen’s Captured Zen Garden

February 16, 2011

Real art, (as opposed to what is commonly referred to by retailers as ‘garden art’ — don’t ask me how I define the difference, because I don’t exactly know, I just know it when I see it)  placed in the landscape is skill unto itself.   This ‘Captured Zen’ garden by Bluegreen realizes various ways to put ‘real’ art in the garden.

Recognizing that nature itself is art (and framing it with a giant picture frame), as well as manipulating nature to create art (as in a modernist painting on the ground created with ajuga, moss and some yellow plant I have not yet identified)  and then and then putting artistic sculpture in the garden (I really love the subtle touch of the elephants near the house and how the indoor art become part of the garden when the large doors are open), this garden design effortlessly and successfully incorporates all sorts of art.

The garden also features rammed earth walls, a zen water garden and reflecting pool and beautiful planting that blends with the natural beauty of the Colorado Mountians that surround.   The only thing I can’t get excited about is the striped cushions on the furniture…it’s another one of those things I can’t explain, I just know what I don’t like when I see it too.
What about you? What inspiration do you find in this garden?

I love the ground cover mosaic effect and those stepping stones! Are those in water? And what’s up with the tree/bed next to the pool- is that water surrounding it, or some shiny paving?

Oh, I think the yellow ground cover is golden creeping thyme. I used to have some until the damp got to it.

  2. Wendy C says:

Love the texture in this garden, I think that texture in a design is underutilized.
I think that the mtstery plant is golden creeping jenny or moneywort. Lysimachia numularia “Aurea”. I use it in zone 6 and it overwinters just fine. Also wonderful in a hanging basket, it is very versatile!!
