Before & After: Artscape’s Staircase Garden

before and after garden makeover staircase garden

Whose back garden looks like this?  Kinda like the builders just left? Hillsides and walk out basements can be tough (and often expensive) but this garden tames the steps with sleek cable railings and while this surely is  not a budget design, it shows how to soften and pull together a hillside garden.  I think a key to big staircases in the garden is to minimize the underside, either make a feature of it, or obscure it because otherwise the steps take up too much visual interest and that’s really just not what most people want to see when they are sipping a gin a tonic in the shade, right?

  1. Art says:

i know everyone loves a tropical paradise but i find this addition not sensitive to the existing context. in the before picture, a japanese-style forest aesthetic creeps in. this has been completely obliterated and in its place a typical california style banana throne is cemented in. judging from the live oak next door, i believe a more sensitive native plant choice would complement the existing airy porch.
