Omori Japanese Street Flowers

April 13, 2012

When I travel, the wealth of small but remarkable ideas that passes before my eyes always pleases me.  Doing a little desktop travel to the village of Omori, Japan which is in the Iwami Ginzan World Heritage Site, I discovered a beautiful tradition that I would love to see in more places.

The main street of the town dates from the 1500’s and you can see where the samurai lived as well as magistrates and merchants that were part of the economy of the local silver mine.   It looks to be a remarkable destination full of Edo period buildings that have been restored.

But there is a beautiful tradition here that I would love to see everywhere.  The residents keep small flower arrangements outside of their homes as a way of decorating their residences.

All of these pictures (and more) were taken in a 1/2 hour walk up the main street of Omori….Lovely right?

    Rochelle,

Thanks for sharing. Beautiful. If you are ever in Switzerland, they honor their dead in a similar way. Many leave fresh arrangements or plantings in their family’s plot. It is amazing!

  2. I am inspired by this streetside beauty…thanks for the post!

  3. Louise says:

The ephemeral beauty is rather breathtaking compared to our use of sturdy stone (or plastic) containers. So..um..oriental, don’t you think? (maybe I mean poetic)

  4. I love to walk along with such a beautiful garden. Nice post!

  5. wow, these flowers are so beautiful and i hope the fragrance would also be as sweet as their look. i wish i have a routine pass by in such kind of streets.
