Before & After: An Impressive Pond in New York State

March 20, 2014

pond, country, big yard, meadow, before & after, makeover

Over the weekend I found a garden blog called Rooting for Ideas. I haven’t been able to explore too much yet, but the few posts I’ve read have been quite promising. And…I found one of my favorite makeovers to date. Probably in the top 5….I think you’ll love it too. Back in 1997, Don and his wife bought an amazing property in New York state called Old Totem Farm. Don started on his garden just after moving in and says that it now spans about 4 acres and entirely surrounds the house. He enjoys creating “garden rooms” and has quite a few at this point….a moon garden, plum orchard, lilac walk, etc. And the best part is that they all encompass his biggest project to date….

The pond project started in 2005 and has since come a long way. I couldn’t find any details on the size other than the fact that it’s 16 feet deep…so if you can imagine what it would be like to stand in a hole 16 feet underground, you might be able to wrap your head around how big this thing is. Anyway, the pond and property has been a constant work in progress, and as of last summer it looks like this:

I know…..amazing, right? And that white siding? Perfection. But back to the pond….I don’t know too many details, but I did read somewhere on his blog that it is stocked with brown trout and that it is frequented by deer during the winter months. You should check out the rest of the photos if you’ve got a moment. They’re pretty great. -erin

  1. Don Statham says:

    Hi Rachelle,
Thanks for featuring my pond. The pond is a quarter acre in size I believe rough estimate is about 75′ feet by 50′ and yes 16′ feet deep. I left a 5′ foot buffer area around the pond and let the wildflowers come in, but with some editing choosing the plants I wanted to stay and eradicating golden rod and cattails. Best Don

  2. Jen says:

That is SO pretty! It is like a little New York-ian paradise!

  3. Pamala says:

Hello there! This is my first visit to your blog!
We are a team of volunteers and starting a new project in a
community in the same niche. Your blog provided us beneficial information to
work on. You have done a marvellous job!

  4. Jody says:

Yes! Finally something about plastic greenhouse shelves.

  5. Howdy would you mind letting me know which hosting company you’re using?

I’ve loaded your blog in 3 completely different web browsers
and I must say this blog loads a lot faster then most.
Can you suggest a good hosting provider at a reasonable price?
    Thank you, I appreciate it!
