Before & After: A New Fence & Path for this Dated Backyard

Hello everyone! I hope all of your spring gardening is off to a great start! Here’s another Before & After post to keep the ideas rolling. I found this one over at a blog called Mel & Liza. Like many homeowners, when Liza moved into her first house, she couldn’t wait to start working outside. After a failed attempt at growing grass in her mostly-shady backyard, she went on to plan B. I don’t think the results could have been any better.

The couple’s backyard pointed outward towards a CVS pharmacy, which practically stared them down every time they went outside. Annoyed with the constant sight of a commercial building, they decided to add height with a new privacy fence. The concrete path was ripped out and replaced by a variety of materials and new beds were planted. What a huge transformation! I really love the broken concrete pieces they used in the corner of the joining paths- it adds just the right amount of personality and dimension without looking hokey. Awesome job, Liza! -erin

Very nice job. You did a great job with the little space that you were able to work with.
